Chat is real-time, text based communication between two or more people over a computer network such as the Internet. There are two types of Internet chat: IRC and Web Chat. IRC (Internet Relay Chat), the original Internet chat protocol, requires special software called a client. See the Internet Relay Chat help archive for FAQs, primers, guides and software. Many chat rooms today are of the web chat variety. In most cases all you need is your web browser. For an introduction to web chat see Learn the Net: Web Chat. If you are new to chat see Chat for Beginners.
Usenet is a network of public discussion forums more commonly referred to as newsgroups. If your web browser is properly configured, these links should open your newsreader. (Refer to your browser's help file or documentation, or contact your Internet service provider for assistance.) You can also read and post news at Google on the web. Beginners should read Learn the Net: Newsgroups for an introduction to Usenet.
